The Most Common Birth Defects

Common birth defects could be infections or metabolic. While infections are like carrying diseases like Rubella, Syphilis or HIV, metabolic are congenital structural disorder. Children with infections can not be treated as very common as they occur in one out of thousands of patient, the most common are coming of the structural defects of heart, skeleton, muscles, circulation and urinary or genital. These defects are common in the sense that they occur in one out of a hundred or so. While these figures are subjective and may vary from location to location a defects remains a reason for concern once it develops.

In USA certain congenital defects are common. They include heart defects, Down syndrome and orofacial clefts. Some heart defects are mild in nature where as others could be a cause of early death. It is said that in some places half of all the death among children below the age of one are caused due to heart diseases acquired as a birth defect. It is reported that one third of children born in the USA have congenital heart disease. Orofacial clefts include cleft lip is a disorder that impedes speech and food intake and defects in the roof of the oral cavity. Down syndrome involves mental or cognitive disability. Over a 5000 babies are born with such disease in the USA alone.

Muscle and skeleton defects cause shortcomings in the legs and arms. Such defect is found in one out of every 130 children born. Spina bifida, which is estimated to affect one out of nearly 2,000 babies born can cause paralysis or affect babies with compliance in the bladder. This is caused due to vitamin deficiency during pregnancy.

Eye defects nervous system disorder is found in one out of about 235 births since it is near common defect. Gastrointestinal deficiency that complicates the function of the stomach intestines and esophagus are also some of the not very uncommon birth defects that need serious attention and corrective measures. Hypospadias is yet another common metabolic disorder that has a bearing on the passage of the urine and its excretion point.
